You have driven somewhere at 2am to get more. And you have probably never said it out loud.
A grown adult, in a car, at two in the morning, for a packet.
We start here and not with your lungs, because you already know about your lungs.
Not thought about going. Gone.
Keys, coat, a twenty minute round trip to a machine that might not even be working.
And if nothing was open, you smoked one you do not even like. Someone else’s brand, out of a drawer, stale. You smoked it anyway.
It sounds daft when you say it out loud. A grown adult, in a car, at two in the morning, for a packet. That is not a bad habit. That is being run by something that is not even helping you.
We start here and not with your lungs, because you already know about your lungs. You have known for years. It has never once got you through a Tuesday afternoon.
Main figure, the loop
The round trip, start to start
The hour
Two in the morning.
The distance
A twenty minute round trip.
The stale packet
Out of a drawer, and you smoked it anyway.
the teaching
What the drive actually proves
The usual reading is that it proves something bad about you. Weak character, no self-control, addictive personality. That reading has been available to you for years and it has never helped, which is the first clue that it is wrong.
Around six thousand a year. Every one of them practice.
Here is the other reading. Every dot up there is one cigarette in a fairly ordinary year. Seven and a half thousand of them, give or take, and the ones in colour are the same few moments repeating. Nothing survives that much repetition without getting good at running itself.
Something got assembled, one repeat at a time, over years, and now it runs without asking you first.
The 2am drive is evidence of how well built the thing is, not of what kind of person you are.
The 2am drive is not evidence of a weak person. It is evidence of a well-built thing.
worked example
Why the stale one out of the drawer matters more than the drive
The drive is dramatic, so it gets the attention. The stale cigarette is the more useful detail.
Because you did not want that cigarette. You did not like the brand, you knew it would taste bad, and you smoked it. Whatever was making the decision was not consulting your preferences at all. It was not even asking for a cigarette you would enjoy. It was closing a loop.
Anything that will accept a cigarette you actively dislike is not responding to pleasure. It is responding to a pattern. And a pattern is a much easier opponent than a pleasure.
a pleasure
Whatever was making the decision was not consulting your preferences at all.
a pattern
It was closing a loop.
Anything that will accept a cigarette you actively dislike is running a pattern, not chasing a pleasure.
the objection
A habit is a built thing
Which means it was assembled, and anything assembled can be taken apart.
“This sounds like you are letting me off the hook.”
It is the opposite. If the problem is your character, there is nothing to do about it on a Wednesday except feel bad and try harder, which is exactly what has not worked so far.
If the problem is a structure, you can take a structure apart. That leaves you with work to do rather than a verdict to live with. The rest of this guide is that work.
your character
There is nothing to do about it on a Wednesday except feel bad and try harder.
a structure
You can take a structure apart.
A pattern is a far easier opponent than a pleasure, because a pattern can be taken apart.
You are only looking for the gap between the reach and the thought.
Nothing yet. Just catch yourself once today, reaching before you decided anything.
The 2am drive is evidence of how well built the thing is, not of what kind of person you are.
Anything that will accept a cigarette you actively dislike is running a pattern, not chasing a pleasure.
A pattern is a far easier opponent than a pleasure, because a pattern can be taken apart.
Next we look at what that reaching actually is, because it is not a decision, and treating it like one is why arguing with yourself has never worked.
