Stress

How to not smoke when you are stressed

A cigarette feels like it eases stress, but the relief is short and the problem is still there when it ends. Part of what feels like stress can be the craving itself. Breathe out slowly, step outside, write the problem down in one line. The urge usually passes within a few minutes.

Why this moment pulls

Many people smoke as a way to cope with stress, and that is part of why it is hard to give up. But Smokefree.gov is clear that smoking is not a long-term stress reliever. It does not fix what is causing the stress, so the stress comes back once the cigarette is gone.

Nicotine adds stress of its own. Smokefree.gov explains that cravings for nicotine feel stressful because the body is going through withdrawal. So the cigarette eases a tension that nicotine helped create. When you first quit, it can feel like stress got worse for a while.

It does get better. The CDC says that once people have quit for a month or two, they feel less stress than they did before they quit. In the meantime, slow breathing, a short walk or naming the problem can do in a few minutes what you used to ask a cigarette to do.

Three moves for stress

Pick one when the stress spikes. Each takes under a minute.

  1. 1Breathe out longer than you breathe in, five times.
  2. 2Step outside for twenty seconds of air.
  3. 3Write the stress down in one line, then pick the next step.

These are the three moves BeQuit gives you for this moment, each under a minute.

If it still hits

If the stress and the urge are both still there, open BeQuit and tap SOS. It walks you through slow breathing while the craving eases, which usually takes a few minutes.

Questions

Why do I want to smoke more when I am stressed?

For many people, smoking became the go-to response to stress, so the two feel linked. Nicotine withdrawal also feels stressful, which makes the urge feel stronger exactly when life is hard. Knowing that the craving and the stress are partly the same feeling can make it easier to ride out.

Does smoking actually relieve stress?

Only briefly. Smokefree.gov says smoking is not a long-term stress reliever and does not solve the problem that is causing the stress. It points out that in the time a cigarette takes, a short walk or a relaxation exercise can be more effective.

What breathing exercise helps with a craving?

Keep it simple: breathe in through your nose and out slowly through your mouth, making the out-breath the longer one. The NHS suggests 4-5-6 breathing: in for four seconds, hold for five, out for six. Smokefree.gov suggests repeating slow breaths about ten times, or until you feel calmer.
