In the car

How to handle a cigarette craving while driving

The car often holds years of smoking: the lighter, the cracked window, the commute. When you start driving, the urge can show up on its own. Keep both hands on the wheel, change what you listen to and keep gum within reach. Eyes on the road. These all work without your phone.

Why this moment pulls

For many people, driving and smoking went together for years. Smokefree.gov lists driving among the everyday activities people most often connect with smoking. The same route, the same traffic light and the same seat can bring the urge back before you notice you are thinking about it.

The car is a small space you cannot leave. You cannot step out for a walk at sixty miles an hour. The CDC points out that mouth substitutes, like a straw, a toothpick or a cinnamon stick, help most when it is hard to leave a situation, such as when you are driving.

The car may also still smell like smoke or hold the old things. The National Cancer Institute suggests removing the ashtray, lighter and cigarettes, cleaning the car, taking a different route or carpooling, and playing music you like and singing along. A car that feels different makes the old drive harder to slip back into.

Three moves for in the car

Eyes on the road. These all work without your phone, and each takes a few seconds.

  1. 1Keep both hands on the wheel.
  2. 2Put on a new playlist or podcast.
  3. 3Keep gum or mints in the car and have one now.

These are the three moves BeQuit gives you for this moment, each under a minute.

If it still hits

Do not reach for your phone while you drive. If the urge is still there when you have parked somewhere safe, open BeQuit and tap SOS for a guided breath. Until then, keep chewing and remind yourself the urge will pass in a few minutes.

Questions

How do I stop smoking in the car?

Clear the car first: ashtray, lighter, every last cigarette. Clean it and air it out. Then change the drive itself with a new route, new music or a passenger. Keep gum, mints or a straw in the cup holder. NCI suggests each of these for short trips.

What about long drives?

Plan them before you leave. NCI suggests taking stretch breaks, bringing healthy snacks and planning your rest stops ahead of time. Rest stops are where many people used to smoke, so decide now what you will do at each one: walk, stretch, refill your water.

Can I use BeQuit while I am driving?

No, and the app does not offer you a phone tool while you drive, on purpose. Eyes on the road. The three car moves all work with your hands on the wheel. Once you have parked, you can open BeQuit and use SOS if the urge is still there.
