Day 12 without smoking

Quit smoking day 12: coughing, breathing and what is changing

Some people cough more in the first weeks after quitting, and others notice nothing. Coughing is a less common withdrawal symptom. Health sources describe coughing and shortness of breath decreasing over months, not days. Around day 12, the change many people notice first is how strong other people's smoke suddenly smells.

What is going on around day 12

The National Cancer Institute lists coughing among the less common withdrawal symptoms, alongside headaches and constipation. Some people cough more for a while after quitting, and some do not cough at all. If you are coughing on day 12, it is a known part of the process, though a cough that worries you is always worth checking.

Lung changes take longer than withdrawal. The CDC says coughing and shortness of breath decrease within one to twelve months of quitting. NHS guidance describes circulation improving from two to twelve weeks. So day 12 is early. You may feel some of it already, and much of it is still ahead.

Smell is another change. NHS guidance says taste and smell are improving from around 48 hours. By day 12, other people's smoke can suddenly smell strong. For some people that is off-putting, and for others it brings a sharp craving. Either reaction is worth knowing about before it happens.

The hard part

Around day 12, a hard moment is often the unplanned one: walking past someone smoking, catching smoke on a terrace, or a friend lighting up next to you. Smokefree.gov lists smelling smoke and seeing someone smoke among the things that make people want a cigarette. It can come out of nowhere on a good day.

One thing for today

If you will be around people who smoke today, decide now where you will stand, and ask one of them not to smoke right next to you.
