Day 1 without smoking

Quit smoking day 1: what the first day is usually like

Day 1 is mostly about getting through the first hours. Cravings can start within an hour or two of your last cigarette, and they come and go rather than staying constant. You may feel tense or restless by evening. That is withdrawal starting, not a sign that quitting is going wrong.

What is going on around day 1

The National Cancer Institute says cravings may start within an hour or two after your last cigarette and are often frequent for the next few days. Your body is used to a certain level of nicotine, so it notices quickly when that level drops. The CDC says the nicotine level in your blood drops to zero within 24 hours.

Tension can show up early too. According to the National Cancer Institute, anxiety can begin within the first 24 hours and usually builds over the first few days. Mild low mood, if it comes, often begins on the first day. Not everyone feels all of this, and some people feel surprisingly fine on day 1.

Each craving is short, even when it feels big. Better Health Channel, a Victorian government health site, says cravings usually only last a few minutes. Smokefree.gov puts it simply: cravings do not last forever, and the moment will pass. On day 1 you are learning that for the first time, one craving at a time.

The hard part

For many people, the hardest part of day 1 is not one big moment but the small ones the cigarette used to fill: the first break, the end of a meal, the drive home. By evening, tiredness and tension can stack up, and the old reward for getting through the day is missing. Expect the evening to need a plan.

One thing for today

Before dinner, write down what you will do for the first ten minutes after it: a walk, a shower, a call, or a glass of water outside.
