Day 3 without smoking
Quit smoking day 3: why it can feel like the hardest day
For many people, day 3 is one of the toughest. The National Cancer Institute says withdrawal is usually worst in the first week and often peaks during the first three days. Cravings, irritability and tension can all be loud today. It is not like this for everyone, and it usually gets easier from here.
What is going on around day 3
The National Cancer Institute says withdrawal symptoms are usually worst during the first week, peaking during the first three days, and that their intensity usually drops over the first month. Anxiety, it says, usually builds over the first three days. Your own experience may be milder, stronger, or arrive a day earlier or later. If today feels heavy, you are in good company.
Some good news sits alongside it. NHS guidance says that at around 72 hours, breathing may feel easier because your bronchial tubes have started to relax, and your energy will be increasing. Plenty of people do not feel this yet, and that is normal too.
Smokefree.gov says the worst withdrawal symptoms only last a few days to a couple of weeks, and that symptoms get weaker and less frequent over time. Some people also notice headaches, tiredness or a cough around now. The National Cancer Institute lists these among the less common symptoms.
The hard part
Mornings often hit hardest around day 3. You wake up after the longest stretch of the day without nicotine, and the first coffee arrives with a strong pull. Patience can be thin before anyone else is even awake. If the first hour goes differently from the old routine, the rest of the day can feel more manageable.
One thing for today
Change the order of your first hour: step outside or open a window for a few minutes before you make coffee, so the morning does not start the old way.

Questions
Is day 3 the worst day of quitting smoking?
For many people it is one of the hardest, though not for everyone. The National Cancer Institute says withdrawal is usually worst in the first week and often peaks during the first three days. Some people find day 2 or day 4 harder. Both the NCI and smokefree.gov say symptoms usually ease over the following weeks.
Why do I have a headache three days after quitting?
The National Cancer Institute lists headaches among the less common withdrawal symptoms, along with tiredness and dizziness. Drinking water, eating regularly and resting where you can are simple places to start. If a headache is severe, unusual for you, or does not go away, check with a doctor.
