Day 2 without smoking

Quit smoking day 2: how often cravings come and how long they last

On day 2, cravings are often frequent, but each one is short. Many people notice they arrive at the moments the cigarettes used to: after meals, on breaks, in the evening. Your body is changing too. NHS guidance says carbon monoxide drops to the level of a non-smoker at around 48 hours.

What is going on around day 2

The National Cancer Institute describes cravings as frequent during the first few days after quitting. They tend to rise, peak and fall rather than build forever. Better Health Channel says each craving usually lasts only a few minutes, and that if you resist each one, they get less powerful over time.

Your body is clearing out what smoking left behind. NHS guidance says that at around 48 hours, carbon monoxide levels have dropped to those of a non-smoker, your lungs are clearing out mucus, and your senses of taste and smell are improving. It is happening whether or not you feel it yet.

Day 2 also shows you when your cravings cluster: after coffee, after meals, on a break, in the car, in the evening. Noticing those moments is useful information, not a failure. Once you know when they tend to come, you can have something ready before they arrive.

The hard part

Many people find day 2 harder than day 1 because the novelty has worn off and the cravings keep coming. There is less adrenaline and more repetition. The evening can be the tough stretch: you are tired, the day is done, and your hand reaches for something that is not there. It helps to know each wave ends.

One thing for today

Put a glass of water or a pack of sugarless gum next to where you usually sit in the evening, so the first thing your hand finds is not empty space.

Questions

How long does a nicotine craving last?

Usually a few minutes, according to Better Health Channel, even if it feels longer because it is intense. Smokefree.gov suggests switching what you are doing right away, drinking water, or breathing slowly about 10 times until it passes. Each one you ride out tends to make the next a little weaker.

Why does food taste different two days after quitting?

NHS guidance says your senses of taste and smell are improving at around 48 hours after your last cigarette. Some people notice food tastes stronger around now. Others notice it later or not much at all. It varies, and it is not a sign that anything is wrong either way.
